The National Health Service is asking the general public to pay for medicines that can help prevent erectile dysfunction in men.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is asking people to pay for Viagra, which is widely available without prescription on the NHS.
It wants to give men with erectile dysfunction the power to order their healthcare to help reduce their risk of erectile dysfunction and other side effects.
A spokesman from the agency, however, said: “The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is working to provide the lowest cost Viagra to men, as there is no price or quality standard for the generic version.”
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency said Viagra costs up to £7 per tablet, compared to £6 for the generic version. The price of a tablet can vary depending on the dosage, but is usually £2 for up to five tablets. Viagra is available without a prescription on prescription by anyone who can afford it.
The spokesman said the MHRA was aware of the problem and was working with the general public to investigate.

Dr Laura Squire, MHRA’s Director of Public Health, said: “Men with severe heart and liver problems should talk to their GP or pharmacist before taking Viagra and they should discuss the potential side effects and risks with their doctor.”The spokesman added: “The MHRA is working with the NHS and other healthcare professionals to investigate these cases to ensure there are no risks to patients.
“The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has a commitment to patient safety and we look forward to providing that support to men with a condition or risk of a serious health problem.
“We also look forward to working with the MHRA to update the prescribing information and to provide guidance on how we can take care of patients who are unable to take Viagra, or who are currently taking other medicines.
“Our work is under way to provide more information and advice for men, including how to take Viagra to reduce their risk of erectile dysfunction.”
